He attended Seattle Preparatory School in Seattle, where he began his basketball career. Hawes was a highly regarded basketball prospect and was rated as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com.
After graduating from high school, Hawes attended the University of Washington, where he played for the Washington Huskies men's basketball team. He was a key player for the Huskies and helped them reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in 2006. Hawes was selected in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. He played for several NBA teams, including the Kings, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers.
During his NBA career, Hawes was known for his ability to shoot from beyond the arc, as well as for his passing and rebounding skills. He played as a center and power forward and was a valuable player for his teams. Hawes retired from professional basketball in 2019, with career averages of 7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.
