Alford had an impressive baseball career as a left-handed pitcher who played in college and professionally. He attended Indiana University where he played for the Hoosiers baseball team from 1984 to 1986. During his college years, Alford was named an All-American and was part of the World University Games team in 1985 that won the gold medal.
