Steven Adams is a professional basketball player from New Zealand who currently plays as the center for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was born on July 20, 1993, in Rotorua, New Zealand. Adams was raised in a family of basketball players; his mother is a Tongan who played for the New Zealand women's national basketball team, and his brothers and sisters are all basketball players themselves.
Adams started playing basketball at a young age, and he was scouted by New Zealand Breakers, a pro basketball team in the Australian Basketball League, at the age of 16. He attended the Scots College in Wellington, where he played for the school's basketball team. After turning down scholarship offers from several American universities, Adams decided to join the Wellington Saints, another pro basketball team in New Zealand.
In 2013, Adams declared himself for the NBA draft, where he was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 12th overall pick. Adams quickly found his niche in the Thunder team as a solid center with impressive defensive skills, which led to the team reaching the NBA Finals in his rookie season. In the following seasons, Adams' game continued to develop, and he became a crucial member of the Thunder's starting line-up. Adams' career highlights include being named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2014 and being named the MVP of the New Zealand national basketball team in 2018.
