Tex Winter, born on February 25, 1922, in Wellington, Texas, was a renowned basketball coach known for his contribution to the development of the triangle offense strategy. Winter is best remembered for his association with the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers. He had a long and illustrious career that spanned over six decades, during which he coached several NBA teams at different levels.
Winter's coaching career started in 1947 as an assistant coach at the University of Southern California. He later joined Kansas State in 1953 as head coach, where he gained recognition for his innovative triangle offense strategy. In the mid-1980s, Winter joined the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach under head coach Phil Jackson. Together, they led the Bulls to six NBA championships, and Winter's expertise in the triangle offense was instrumental in their success.
Winter continued his coaching career with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he again teamed up with Phil Jackson to win five more NBA championships. In 2011, Winter was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his immense contribution to the sport of basketball. Tex Winter died in October 2018 at the age of 96, but his legacy continues to live on, as the triangle offense strategy he created remains a vital part of basketball coaching today.
