Van Chancellor Autographs
Van Chancellor is widely regarded as one of the great basketball coaches of all time. Born Van Harold Chancellor on September 23, 1943, in Hobbs, New Mexico, he went to school at the University of Mississippi, where he played basketball and obtained a degree in English. Chancellor began his coaching career in 1971 at the Mississippi University for Women, where he led the team to four national championships. In 1982, he joined the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he coached for six seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 1985. However, it was his work in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) that he put his name on the map with basketball enthusiasts worldwide.
Chancellor was the first head coach in WNBA history for the Houston Comets, operating as a head coach and general manager. He led the team to four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000. During his eight-year tenure as the team's head coach, he recorded a record of 211-111, making him the winningest coach in WNBA history. Chancellor's contributions to women's basketball were acknowledged when he was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He also assisted Team USA in winning gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he served as an assistant coach.
Van Chancellor has held several significant coaching roles in his career. The Southern Baptist Convention elected him to serve as the head coach for the annual Sports Crusaders Basketball Camps in 1983, which gave Chancellor an opportunity to work with kids and share his knowledge of the game. In 2007, he became the general manager and head coach of the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA, and in 2009, he was appointed coach of the LSU Lady Tigers Basketball Team, which he led to the Final Four in 2008, a year when he was named Southeastern Conference Coach of the year. Chancellor retired twice during his career, once in 2006 as a WNBA coach and again in 2011 after stepping down as LSU's coach. Nevertheless, he left a long-lasting effect on the sport of basketball and continues to be an influential figure in the world of basketball.
