Van Chancellor Autograph
Van Chancellor is widely regarded as one of the great basketball coaches of all time. Born Van Harold Chancellor on September 23, 1943, in Hobbs, New Mexico, he went to school at the University of Mississippi, where he played basketball and obtained a degree in English. Chancellor began his coaching career in 1971 at the Mississippi University for Women, where he led the team to four national championships. In 1982, he joined the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he coached for six seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 1985. Van Chancellor has held several significant coaching roles in his career. The Southern Baptist Convention elected him to serve as the head coach for the annual Sports Crusaders Basketball Camps in 1983, which gave Chancellor an opportunity to work with kids and share his knowledge of the game. In 2007, he became the general manager and head coach of the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA, and in 2009, he was appointed coach of the LSU Lady Tigers Basketball Team, which he led to the Final Four in 2008, a year when he was named Southeastern Conference Coach of the year. Chancellor retired twice during his career, once in 2006 as a WNBA coach and again in 2011 after stepping down as LSU's coach.
