Walter Sharpe Autographs
Walter Sharpe was an American professional basketball player, born on July 18, 1986, in Birmingham, Alabama. He began his career at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he played for two seasons and was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Standing at 6'9" and weighing 245 pounds, he was known for his athleticism, rebounding skills, and a developing three-point shot.
Sharpe was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft. Though he struggled with injuries during his rookie season, he played 14 games and averaged 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Sharpe was loaned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League for the remainder of the season where he averaged 15.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. During the 2009 pre-season, he suffered a groin injury and was waived by Detroit. He had brief stints in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls, but spent the majority of his professional career playing overseas in countries such as Spain, Bahrain, China, and Puerto Rico.
Sharpe's basketball career was cut short by drug addiction and legal troubles. In April 2017, he was arrested in Georgia on drug charges and served two years in prison. However, he has since turned his life around and now works as a youth basketball coach and mentor in Birmingham. He believes that sharing his story can help young athletes avoid the mistakes he made and achieve their goals. "Basketball was everything to me, but I let other things become more important," Sharpe said. "Now I want to give back to the game and help young players stay focused and committed to their dreams."
