William Avery Autographs
William Avery, born on August 8, 1979, in Augusta, Georgia, is a retired American professional basketball player. He had a successful basketball career, beginning with his high school years at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Avery was a McDonald's All-American in 1997, and also played in the Jordan Classic that year. He was widely considered a top five recruit in the country and chose Duke University to pursue his college basketball career.
Avery played for the Duke Blue Devils from 1997 to 1999, and was an integral part of the team during his two years at the university. In his sophomore year, he helped lead the Blue Devils to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Connecticut. Avery averaged 14.9 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game in his second year with the Blue Devils. He declared for the NBA draft after his sophomore season and was selected with the 14th overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1999 draft.
William Avery played for four years in the NBA, playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Boston Celtics, the Denver Nuggets, and the Seattle SuperSonics. He struggled to find his footing in the league, averaging only 2.7 points and 1.2 assists in his NBA career. After leaving the NBA, Avery played for several international teams before retiring in 2010. Despite his lack of success in the NBA, Avery is remembered for his impressive college career at Duke, where he was a standout player and helped lead the Blue Devils to success in the late 1990s.
