Christy Martin is a former American professional boxer who rose to prominence in the 1990s. Born on June 12, 1968, in Mullens, West Virginia, Martin started her career as a professional boxer in 1989 after she won her debut fight against Angela Buchanan. Her professional career spanned between 1989 to 2012 and she fought 59 bouts, winning 49 of them, losing six, while four of them ended in a draw.
Martin, who was nicknamed the "Coal Miner's Daughter" because of her West Virginia roots, was one of the most successful female boxers in the 1990s. She achieved her breakthrough when she became the first woman to be featured in a boxing pay-per-view event in 1996. The event, which was dubbed "Boxing's Beauty and the Beast," saw Martin victorious against Deirdre Gogarty in a high-energy bout that ended in a unanimous decision from the judges. In addition to her successful career in boxing, Martin was also a television personality and an actress. She appeared in films that include "The Brave One" and "Girlfight" and was also a co-host of a Spike TV's "Knockouts Along the Way."
Despite several setbacks and experiencing domestic violence, Martin continued to inspire many aspiring boxers and was a trailblazer in women's boxing. Her achievements in the sport were recognized when she was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. Although she retired from boxing in 2012, the impact she had on the sport and the trail she blazed for women's boxing will always be remembered.
