Diaz turned pro in 2000, and his first fight was a first-round knockout against Rafael Ortiz. Over the next few years, he fought and won several bouts, becoming the WBA lightweight champion in 2004. He was known for his high work rate, relentless pressure, and excellent stamina, which earned him the nickname "Baby Bull." Diaz had a record of 36 wins (18 by knockout), 6 losses, and 1 draw in his professional boxing career.

Throughout his career, Diaz fought some of the top names in the sport, including Julio Diaz, Acelino Freitas, Paulie Malignaggi, and Juan Manuel Marquez.
