During his prime, Walker was a dominant force in the welterweight and middleweight divisions of boxing, and his fighting style was known for its aggression and versatility. He was a skilled counter-puncher, had an exceptional chin, and was proficient in both boxing and brawling techniques. He won the world middleweight championship in 1926, defeating Jack Britton in a 15-round bout, and successfully defended the title against top contenders like Tiger Flowers and Ace Hudkins. In 1931, he moved up to the light heavyweight division and won the title by defeating Maxie Rosenbloom, becoming the first fighter to hold both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles.

However, Walker's success was marred by his struggle with alcoholism, and he retired from boxing in 1935 after losing to future heavyweight champion Joe Louis. In his career, Walker had a record of 91 wins, 22 losses, and 4 draws, with 60 wins by knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, and his legacy as a ferocious fighter and a two-division world champion remains to this day in the history of boxing.
