Gillis began his career in special effects as an apprentice to Stan Winston, a legendary special effects artist and filmmaker. He honed his skills in sculpting and designing monsters, working on numerous films that include James Cameron's "The Terminator" and "Aliens." In 1988, he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI), a special effects studio that has created some of the most iconic creatures in film history. Gillis' noteworthy works include the Predator from "Predator," the aliens in the "Alien vs. Predator" series, and the zombie effects in "The Walking Dead."

Gillis has become a trusted and sought-after artist in Hollywood, having worked on over 150 feature films throughout his career. In addition, he has received multiple awards and nominations for his work, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects for "Starship Troopers" and "Death Becomes Her."
