Arthur Hailey was an acclaimed British-Canadian novelist, born on April 5, 1920, in Luton, England. He completed his education at William Hulme's Grammar School in Manchester and then served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II. After the war, he worked in advertising and public relations for many years, which helped him develop a keen sense of observation about the corporate world he often wrote about. In 1955, he published his first novel, "Butterfield 8," which was met with critical acclaim. However, it was his third novel, "Hotel," published in 1965, that propelled him to fame, and marked the start of his successful writing career.
Hailey was a master of weaving intricate tales of suspense and drama, set against the backdrop of various industries such as the hotel and aviation industries. His focus on portraying ordinary people in extraordinary situations made his stories relatable to a wide range of readers. Hailey's books were incredibly popular and were often turned into movies, such as "Airport," "Strong Medicine," and "The Moneychangers." He also wrote TV scripts, including episodes of the popular show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
Despite his immense success, Hailey remained humble and grounded throughout his career. His love for writing novels fuelled his passion for storytelling, and he remained focused on telling gripping stories that readers could not put down. His work continues to be popular, with many younger readers discovering his classic novels even today. Hailey passed away on November 24, 2004, but his legacy as a master storyteller lives on.
