Chuck Thompson Autographs

Chuck Thompson was a cherished sports broadcaster, voice actor, and writer, who spent over three decades behind the microphone calling Baltimore Orioles baseball games. Born on June 10, 1921, in Palmer Springs, Virginia, Chuck started his career struggling to make ends meet after serving in the navy during World War II. He had a stroke of good luck in 1949 when he was working for the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference radio network, and one of the conference’s schools, Marshall University asked him to fill in for their regular announcer. It was that chance that led him to be hired by the Baltimore Orioles, where he became an iconic voice in Orioles history.
While working as a sports broadcaster, Chuck Thompson was best known for his work as the voice of the Baltimore Orioles, where he covered over 2,000 games for the team. He began his career with the franchise during the 1955 season and continued with them until his final broadcast in 1987. His calling of the Orioles’ games was distinguished by his unparalleled talent to paint a picture so vividly that one could feel as though they were in attendance of every single game he covered. Chuck’s signature phrases, "ain't the beer cold!" and "go to war, Miss Agnes!" will live in the hearts of Orioles' fans as they were part of his iconic delivery that became so familiar they created the background noise for the Orioles.
In recognition of Chuck Thompson’s significant contributions to baseball, he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1987. That was one year after he retired, making him only the second broadcaster ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. When Chuck Thompson passed away on October 3, 2005, the Orioles organization honored him before the start of a game. The vivid memories of his legendary voice and his unwavering dedication to the Orioles' success live on in the hearts of Baltimoreans everywhere today.
