David Prowse Autographs
David Prowse was a British actor and bodybuilder best known for physically portraying Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. Born in Bristol, England in 1935, Prowse initially gained recognition as a champion weightlifter and bodybuilder in the 1960s. His imposing 6'6" frame and muscular physique led to early acting roles, including appearances in the James Bond spoof Casino Royale (1967) and Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971).
Prowse's most iconic role came in 1977 when he was cast as Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. While James Earl Jones provided Vader's voice, it was Prowse who gave the character his menacing physical presence on screen. He reprised the role in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), cementing Darth Vader as one of cinema's most memorable villains. Despite the character's popularity, Prowse's face remained largely unknown to audiences as it was always obscured by Vader's mask.
Beyond Star Wars, Prowse appeared in over 70 films during his career. He became a beloved figure at sci-fi conventions, where he regularly met with fans. Prowse was also widely recognized in the UK as the Green Cross Code Man, a superhero character used in road safety campaigns for children. For his contributions to road safety and charity work, Prowse was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2000. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy as the man who brought one of pop culture's most iconic villains to life.
