David Scott Autographs
David Scott was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1932. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and became a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. After his initial service, he pursued graduate studies in aeronautics and astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1963, he was chosen to join NASA’s astronaut corps and began training for his first space mission.
In 1966, Scott was selected as the Command Module Pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, which was the first mission to dock two spacecraft in orbit. During the mission, the crew experienced a malfunction in the spacecraft’s thrusters, leading to an unexpected rotation. Scott and his crewmate, Neil Armstrong, were able to quickly resolve the issue and safely return to Earth. Scott’s experience on this mission, along with his subsequent work as a backup commander for Apollo 12, prepared him for his most famous mission- Apollo 15.
Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon, and Scott was chosen as the mission commander. He and his crewmates performed several experiments and collected rock samples while on the moon’s surface. Scott also became the first person to drive a vehicle on the Moon- the Lunar Roving Vehicle. His work on this mission earned him numerous honors, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and induction into the International Space Hall of Fame. After his career with NASA, Scott continued to work in the aerospace industry and became an advocate for space exploration and education.
