Burns' baseball documentary, titled "Baseball," was a massive success and turned him into a household name. The nine-part series chronicled the history of baseball in the United States from its inception in the mid-1800s to the present-day. The documentary, which aired in 1994, was narrated by Burns and featured interviews with prominent baseball players, coaches, historians, and fans. It became one of PBS's most-watched programs and helped revive interest in the sport in the mid-1990s, which had been waning since the 1980s.

Burns continued to make documentaries on various subjects, but baseball remained his first love.
