Monty Woolley was an American stage, film, and television actor who rose to fame in the 1930s and 1940s. Born on August 17, 1888, in New York City, Woolley attended college at Yale University, where he was known for his wit and humor. Woolley made his Broadway debut in the play "The Third Little Show" in 1931, which led to a successful stage career. In 1936, he starred in the Broadway production of "The Man Who Came to Dinner," which became his signature role. Woolley played the character of Sheridan Whiteside, a pompous radio personality who is forced to spend Christmas with a middle-class family after injuring himself. The play was a huge success and was later adapted into a film, with Woolley reprising his role on-screen. Woolley received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film.

Woolley appeared in several other films throughout the 1940s and 1950s, including "Holy Matrimony," "Since You Went Away," and "Kismet." He also made his mark on television in the 1950s, appearing in shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Ford Show." In addition to his acting career, Woolley was known for his wit and humor, and he often entertained his friends in Hollywood with his stories and jokes. Woolley passed away on May 6, 1963, in Albany, New York, at the age of 74, but his legacy lives on as one of Hollywood's most beloved character actors.
