He began his music career in the early 1960s, playing jug band music with his friends in Palo Alto under the name the Wildwood Boys. In 1963, Hunter met Jerry Garcia, and they quickly became friends and began collaborating on music. Hunter wrote the lyrics for many of the Grateful Dead's most famous songs, including "Truckin'," "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Touch of Grey." His partnership with Garcia helped define the sound and spirit of the Dead, and their working relationship lasted for over 30 years.
Hunter was more than just a songwriter for the Grateful Dead, he was also an important member of the band's inner circle. He was a bandmate during tours, and he even popularized the term "Deadhead" to describe the band's fans.
