He was a standout quarterback in high school where he earned All-American honors and chose to attend Grossmont College before transferring to Grossmont College. He became a starter for the University of Oregon football team and his performance earned him several accolades, including the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year Award in 1998. Smith's football career took off when he was selected in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed a lucrative contract worth $56 million, but his career with the team struggled due to his inability to adjust to the NFL level quickly. Smith played two seasons for the Bengals, starting just 17 games, and completing only 215 passes for 2,212 yards and just five touchdowns. His career with the NFL was short-lived but Smith played briefly in the CFL and Arena Football League before ultimately retiring from football in 2007.

Despite his underwhelming NFL career, Akili Smith will always be remembered for his standout collegiate career and being a first round draft pick. His lack of success in the NFL can be attributed to several factors, including his inability to adjust to the pro level and lack of experience.
