Alan Ameche Autographs
Alan Ameche was a celebrated football player and one of the great American football running backs from the 1950s. Born on June 1, 1933, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Ameche began his football career as a high school student. He continued his football journey at the University of Wisconsin, where he played college football from 1951-1954. At Wisconsin, Ameche was known as "The Horse" for his powerful running style and his ability to maintain balance even when tackled by multiple defenders.
After finishing his college career, Ameche was selected eighth overall by the Baltimore Colts in the 1955 NFL Draft. His rookie year was a prosperous one, as he was named the NFL's Rookie of the Year, and helped the Colts win the NFL Championship game against the New York Giants. Ameche continued his successful career with the Colts, accumulating over 4,400 total yards and 44 touchdowns during his six-year stint with the team. He then announced his retirement from football, citing chronic back pain that had plagued him since college.
Alan Ameche will always be remembered for his iconic touchdown in the 1958 NFL Championship game where he scored the game-winning touchdown in sudden death overtime to secure the victory for the Baltimore Colts over the New York Giants. That game-winning touchdown was later referred to as the 'Greatest Game Ever Played.' Ameche's determination, strength, and resiliency made him a central figure in the development of American football. His contributions to NFL will always remain an essential part of American football history.
