Okwuegbunam began playing football in high school, where he developed a keen interest in the sport. He went on to play college football for the Missouri Tigers, where he had an impressive career. In his freshman year, Okwuegbunam recorded 11 touchdowns, the most by a freshman tight end in SEC history. This feat earned him Freshman All-American and second-team All-SEC honors. Okwuegbunam continued to excel in college, and in his final year, he recorded 23 touchdowns and 98 receptions.
