Alex Agase Autographs
Alex Agase was an American Football player and coach, born in Chicago in 1922. He played as a guard and linebacker at the University of Illinois, where he was a two-time consensus All-American and helped lead the Illini to a Big Ten championship in 1946. Agase was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1947, but before he could play, he was drafted into the Army during World War II. After serving, he played for the Browns in 1949 before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 1950. Agase retired after two seasons with the Rams, but his name lives on in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1963.
Despite a successful playing career, it was as a coach that Agase made his mark on the football world. He began his coaching career at Northwestern University in 1956, where he turned a struggling program into a Big Ten champion in 1958. He then moved on to become head coach at Purdue in 1962, and in three seasons, he took the Boilermakers from last place to a share of the Big Ten title in 1967. Agase returned to his alma mater, Illinois, in 1971, and served as head coach there for five seasons. Though he never won a conference championship with the Illini, he did lead them to the Rose Bowl in 1984 as an assistant coach.
Alex Agase passed away in 2007 at the age of 85, but his legacy lives on in the many players he coached, and the many who preceded him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was known for his tough, no-nonsense coaching style, but also for his dedication to his players and the game of football. With over two decades of coaching experience at the college level, Agase left an indelible mark on American Football, and his contributions to the sport are still celebrated today.
