Alex Karras was born on July 15, 1935, in Gary, Indiana. He became a football star in both high school and college, playing for Indiana University during the late 1950s. Karras was a standout defensive lineman, earning All-American honors in 1957 and 1958. He ultimately played 12 seasons in the NFL, starring for the Detroit Lions from 1958 to 1970. He quickly became one of the league’s most ferocious pass rushers and appeared in four Pro Bowls. Karras was also known for his on-the-field temper and controversial actions. He was famously suspended for the entire 1963 season for his involvement in gambling activities, though his suspension was later reduced to four games. Karras made headlines again in 1967, when he refused to participate in a game against the Green Bay Packers due to a contract dispute. He ultimately returned to the field, but his relationship with the Lions was irreparably damaged.
