Karras was also known for his on-the-field temper and controversial actions. He was famously suspended for the entire 1963 season for his involvement in gambling activities, though his suspension was later reduced to four games. Karras made headlines again in 1967, when he refused to participate in a game against the Green Bay Packers due to a contract dispute. He ultimately returned to the field, but his relationship with the Lions was irreparably damaged. Karras retired from professional football in 1970, but he remained active in the sport, working as a commentator (including for Monday Night Football) and even briefly coaching for the Lions.

After his football career, Karras transitioned to acting, appearing in movies like “Blazing Saddles” and “Porky’s.” He was also a regular on the sitcom “Webster” and hosted his own talk show. Karras sadly passed away in 2012 at the age of 77 after suffering from kidney disease and dementia. While his post-football career was also noteworthy, it was his aggressive, hard-hitting play on the field that defined him as one of the most fearsome defenders in NFL history.
