Art Donovan Autographs
Art Donovan was an American football defensive tackle who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons. He was born on June 5, 1924, in the Bronx, New York City. Donovan attended Mount St. Michael High School and later joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Following his military service, Donovan enrolled at Boston College where he played college football.
Donovan was drafted by the New York Giants in the 22nd round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants from 1950 to 1952, and during that time, he became one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the league. In 1953, Donovan was traded to the Baltimore Colts, where he played for the next eight seasons. He was a part of the Colts team that won back-to-back NFL championships in 1958 and 1959. Donovan was selected to five Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro team three times.
Donovan retired from professional football in 1961, after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys, but chose to make a return with the Colts the following year. He played for one more season before retiring permanently. In 1968, Donovan was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After his playing career, he became a sports commentator and humorist, making several appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Donovan passed away on August 4, 2013, at the age of 88. His legacy as one of the greatest defensive tackles in NFL history lives on.
