Bennie Oosterbaan was a legendary American football player who played as a halfback and end for the University of Michigan. He was born on February 4, 1906, in Muskegon, Michigan. Oosterbaan had a remarkable college football career from 1925 to 1927, where he led the Big Ten Conference in receiving yards for two consecutive seasons and set a record for touchdown receptions that stood for 27 years. After his college career, Oosterbaan became an assistant coach for the University of Michigan football team under head coach Harry Kipke. In 1948, Kipke resigned as head coach, and Oosterbaan took over the position, becoming the 16th head coach in Michigan football history. Oosterbaan coached the Wolverines for 11 seasons and led them to three Big Ten championships and two Rose Bowl victories. He coached many notable players, including Fritz Crisler, Tom Harmon, and Forest Evashevski, who went on to achieve great success in their football careers.
Bennie Oosterbaan's contributions to American football extend beyond his playing and coaching careers. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954 and received numerous other awards and honors throughout his life.
