Bill Simpson Autographs
Bill Simpson, born on August 14, 1940, in Hermiston, Oregon, is a retired American football safety who played eight seasons for the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills from 1964 to 1972. Simpson was an outstanding high school athlete and earned all-state honors in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1963, Simpson was selected by the Rams in the fifth round of the NFL draft.
Simpson quickly established himself as one of the best players on the Rams' defense. In his rookie season, he intercepted six passes and returned one for a touchdown, earning him All-Rookie honors. In 1968, he was named to the Pro Bowl after leading the league in interceptions with seven. After five seasons with the Rams, Simpson was traded to the Buffalo Bills for two draft picks. He played three more seasons with the Bills before retiring in 1972. Despite playing in only eight seasons, Simpson accumulated 32 interceptions and 570 return yards, earning him a place in the Rams' Hall of Fame.
After retiring from football, Simpson founded Simpson Performance Products, a manufacturer of safety equipment for motorsports. He also helped design helmets and other safety equipment for football, including the first full face mask for quarterbacks. Simpson's innovations in safety equipment have helped reduce injuries in several sports, and his contributions have been recognized with induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame and the SEMA Hall of Fame.
