After his college career, Cannon went on to play professional football in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). He started his professional career with the Houston Oilers in the AFL 1960 season, leading the league with 948 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Cannon also became the AFL's first-ever Most Valuable Player that same year. He played for the Oilers until 1964 and then joined the Oakland Raiders for two seasons before retiring from professional football in 1970. His overall career stats earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Despite Cannon's success on the field, his personal life was volatile, and he was convicted for counterfeiting in 1984. He spent two and a half years in prison and lost his dentistry license as a result. However, during his later life, he turned his life around and became a spokesperson for drug and alcohol prevention in schools. Cannon passed away at the age of 80 on May 20, 2018, due to unspecified health issues, but he remains one of the most celebrated football players in history.
