Billy Cannon was an American football player born on August 2, 1937, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He played college football at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, where he became a Heisman Trophy winner in 1959. Cannon's collegiate career was highlighted by leading LSU to the 1958 National Championship, where he accounted for 162 yards of total offense, including the game-winning touchdown in the 7–0 victory over Clemson. After his college career, Cannon went on to play professional football in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). He started his professional career with the Houston Oilers in the AFL 1960 season, leading the league with 948 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Cannon also became the AFL's first-ever Most Valuable Player that same year. He played for the Oilers until 1964 and then joined the Oakland Raiders for two seasons before retiring from professional football in 1970.
