Davie's coaching career spanned over three decades, during which he served as an assistant coach at various universities across the country. He got his big break in 1994 when he was hired by the University of Notre Dame as a defensive coordinator. He became the head coach of the Fighting Irish football team in 1997 and led the team to three bowl games in five seasons. Despite early success, his tenure at Notre Dame came to an end after a string of disappointing seasons, and Davie was fired in 2001.

After leaving Notre Dame, Davie worked as a television analyst for ESPN for several years before returning to coaching in 2012 when he was hired by the University of New Mexico. During his time at New Mexico, Davie rebuilt the football program and led the team to its first bowl victory in nearly a decade in 2016. He stepped down as head coach in 2019 due to health reasons, ending his coaching career with a record of 72-89. Despite the ups and downs, Bob Davie's impact on American football will be felt for years to come.
