St. Clair was born in San Francisco in 1931 and played college football at the University of San Francisco. It was here that St. Clair first began to make a name for himself as an outstanding football player. In his senior year, he earned All-America honors and was drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 1953 NFL draft.
