Childress's coaching career began in 1978, where he first served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Illinois. He then went on to become a position coach for various teams such as the University of Utah, University of Wisconsin, and Philadelphia Eagles. However, his most significant achievement was his time as head coach for the Minnesota Vikings. He took the team from a 6-10 season to two consecutive division championships, making a 22-10 record in two seasons. He also led the team to the 2009 NFC Championship game, which ended in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. Childress's coaching success was recognized in the NFL when he was named Coach of the Year in 2009.

After leaving the Vikings in 2010, Childress served as an assistant coach for various NFL teams before retiring in 2017. He devoted his life to American football, completing a long and distinguished career as one of the industry's leading figures.
