Bronco Mendenhall is a former American football player and current head coach for the Virginia Cavaliers football team. Mendenhall was born on February 21, 1966, in Alpine, Utah, and spent his childhood playing football and baseball. Mendenhall continued his football career at Snow College before transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU) to play for the Cougars. While at BYU, Mendenhall played linebacker and became a team captain. After graduating in 1989, he went on to play professionally for the Dallas Cowboys for two seasons before retiring due to a knee injury.

Following his playing career, Mendenhall began coaching and quickly made a name for himself. He served as an assistant coach for several college teams, including the University of Oregon, Louisiana Tech University, and New Mexico. In 2003, Mendenhall returned to BYU as the defensive coordinator, and in 2005, he was promoted to head coach. Under Mendenhall's leadership, BYU had several successful seasons, including six conference championships and 11 consecutive bowl game appearances.
