Buddy Young Autograph

Buddy Young was an American football player who became one of the most exciting and dynamic players in the game's history. Born on January 5, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, Young played his college football at the University of Illinois, where he was a two-time All-American running back. After college, he was drafted by the New York Yankees of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1947 and by the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League (NFL) in 1948. Young chose to play for the Yankees and became one of the league's stars, leading the AAFC in rushing yards in 1947 and being named the league's Most Valuable Player in 1948. More about Buddy Young

When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, Young became a member of the New York Giants, where he continued to showcase his incredible speed and agility. He played for the Giants from 1950 to 1955, primarily as a running back and return specialist, but also saw time as a defensive back. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1952, and in that same season, he became the first African American to score a touchdown in a Pro Bowl game. During his career, he had over 5,000 all-purpose yards and scored 29 touchdowns.

After retiring from football, Young stayed involved in the sport, becoming a scout and front office executive for the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990 and passed away on September 5, 1983, at the age of 57. Buddy Young's electrifying play, groundbreaking accomplishments, and tireless work in the world of football continue to make him a beloved and influential figure in the sport's history.
