Cecil Isbell Autographs
Cecil Isbell was born on July 11, 1915, in Houston, Texas. He was a versatile athlete, playing both football and basketball in high school. After graduating, he enrolled in Purdue University, where he became a standout football player at the quarterback position. In his junior and senior years, he led the team to two Big Ten championships and was named an All-American.
In 1938, Isbell was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the first round (fifth overall) of the NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league, leading his team to three NFL championships and earning All-Pro honors four times. He was known for his precise passing and strategic play-calling, as well as his ability to read defenses and make quick decisions on the field. His career stats include 59 touchdown passes, 5,945 passing yards, and a 74.6 quarterback rating.
Isbell retired from football after the 1942 season, but his impact on the game is still felt today. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967, and his jersey number (17) was retired by the Packers in 1951. He went on to coach football at various levels, including a stint as head coach at Purdue, where he had once been a star player. Isbell died in 1985 but left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks and football minds of his generation.
