Chris Kluwe is a retired American Football punter who spent significant time in the National Football League (NFL) playing for teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and the Seattle Seahawks. Kluwe was born on December 24, 1981, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a standout punter for the Bruins from 2000 to 2004. Kluwe became a fan favorite for more than just his skills on the field, as he became known for his vocal activism, bravery, and outspoken personality off the field. He used his voice to raise awareness about civil rights issues, particularly the fight for marriage equality, which resulted in his departure from the NFL. In 2013, after being released by the Vikings, Kluwe published an article detailing his belief that the team's special-teams coordinator had cut him from the team because of his advocacy for marriage equality.
