Battles' standout season was 1937, when he led the NFL in rushing with 874 yards and helped guide the Redskins to the NFL Championship. His performance that year earned him recognition as the NFL's Most Valuable Player, making him the first Redskins player to win the award. Battles' success on the field paved the way for other African American football players in the NFL, as he was one of the few black players in the league during his time. Despite facing discrimination and racism, Battles remained dedicated to his craft and left a lasting legacy on American football.
As a result of his impressive career, Battles was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. In addition to his contributions to the game, Battles was also known for his philanthropic work, including his efforts to help underprivileged children.
