Cookie Gilchrist Autographs
Cookie Gilchrist, born on May 25, 1935, was an American football player who played professionally in the American Football League (AFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL) during the 1960s. He was born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the Pittsburgh area, where he attended Har-Brack High School. After high school, Gilchrist attended the University of Pittsburgh but was expelled for fighting.
Gilchrist began his football career in Canada in 1956, playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. He became known for his powerful running style and amassed 1,254 yards in his rookie season, which was a record at the time. In 1962, after spending time with the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Gilchrist signed with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL. In his first season with the Bills, he rushed for 1,096 yards and scored 13 touchdowns, leading his team to the AFL championship game. Gilchrist was named the AFL’s Most Valuable Player, becoming the first African-American player to receive the honor.
Despite his success on the field, Gilchrist had a reputation for being difficult to work with and was often at odds with his coaches and teammates. He was traded from the Bills to the Denver Broncos in 1965 and played for several other teams before retiring in 1967. He finished his professional career with 5,397 yards rushing and 36 touchdowns. Gilchrist passed away in 2011 at the age of 76, but will always be remembered as a powerful and dominant force in the world of American football.
