After graduation, Jones was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 14th round of the 1961 NFL draft. During his 14-year NFL career, Jones became known as one of the greatest defensive players of all time. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year in 1967 and 1968. Jones was quick, agile, and powerful, and it was his signature move, the “head slap,” a move he patented, that helped him become one of the most feared players on the field.

Off the field, Jones was known as a charismatic and outgoing person who was beloved by his teammates and fans. After his playing days were over, Jones remained involved in the football world as a coach, author, and analyst. He never lost his passion for the game and was always willing to share his knowledge and love for the sport with anyone who would listen. Deacon Jones passed away in 2013 at the age of 74 but his impact on the game of football and his legacy as one of the game’s all-time greats will live on forever.
