Shofner began his professional football career in 1957 as a starter for the Los Angeles Rams, where he played for six seasons. In 1961, he was traded to the New York Giants and played for another five seasons. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and was named to the All-Pro team twice. Shofner also led the NFL in receiving yards during his first year with the Giants in 1962, with a total of 1,110 yards, and helped lead the team to the NFL Championship game in 1963, where they lost to the Chicago Bears.

Shofner retired from professional football in 1967, having accumulated 6,470 receiving yards and 51 touchdowns over 11 seasons. Although his career was relatively short by modern standards, his impact on American football cannot be overlooked, and his legacy has continued to inspire future generations of football players.
