In 1978, Thurman was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the eleventh round of the NFL Draft. He played for the Cowboys for five years before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1983. He played for the Cardinals for two years before retiring as a player in 1985. After retiring, Thurman began coaching for various teams, including being the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets from 2014 to 2016.

In his coaching career, Thurman was known for being a great defensive coach. His coaching career included stints with the Arizona Cardinals, USC, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and the St. Louis Rams. He was part of the coaching team that won the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001. Dennis Thurman is a revered figure in the NFL for his contributions to the game.
