Ward's career took an unexpected and fortunate turn after being signed onto the New York Giants. He played for the Giants for three seasons, starting two seasons as a backup to Tiki Barber in 2006 and then taking over as the starting running back after Barber retired. In 2008, Ward recorded career-high stats in playtime, rushing yards, receptions, and touchdowns leading the Giants to their Wildcard and all the way to Super Bowl XLII. Ward is remembered for his contribution to winning the NFC Championship by racking up 24 carries for 69 yards and adding another 16 receiving yards. He finished that season with 1,025 yards rushing, 41 receptions, and five total touchdowns.

Ward went on to play three more seasons with Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans, where his productivity continued to impress with 1,025 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns during his 2009 season. After retiring from professional football in 2012, Ward continued his commitment to the game by coaching at St. Mary's high school in California. Despite a challenging childhood, Derrick Ward persisted through his adversities and discovered success in professional football, achieving over 3,900 rushing yards and 569 receivers.
