In 1968, Dick Anderson was drafted by the Miami Dolphins as a third-round pick. He gradually transitioned from being a backup player to a starting role. Anderson's breakout season came in 1972 when he helped the Miami Dolphins win the Super Bowl VII against the Washington Redskins. He had a record-breaking season, intercepting eight passes during the regular season and two during the playoffs. His heroic performance earned him several awards, including the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, an All-Pro selection, and a Pro Bowl appearance.

Anderson's NFL career lasted for nine seasons, all of which were spent playing for the Miami Dolphins. He retired in 1977, finishing his career with 34 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries, and 4 touchdowns. Anderson is widely regarded as one of the best safeties to have played the game.
