Meredith played college football for Southern Methodist University where he was named to the All-Southwest Conference team in 1958 and 1959. In 1960, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and became the starting quarterback during the team's second season. Meredith’s skill and leadership on the field helped the Dallas Cowboys become one of the most successful and popular teams in the National Football League during the 1960s. He was named to the Pro Bowl twice in his career and was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1976.

After retiring from football in 1969, Meredith became a television sports commentator and appeared as a regular on Monday Night Football from 1970 to 1984. He quickly became known for his colorful commentary and humorous banter with his co-hosts, Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. Meredith’s wit and humor made him a beloved figure in the world of sports broadcasting, and he remained active in that industry until his death in 2010 at the age of 72.
