Johnson's basketball career started in high school, where he played for his team in his hometown of Mississippi. He was later recruited to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he became a standout player for the Illinois Fighting Illini. Johnson's scoring ability caught the attention of scouts, and he was eventually picked by the Kansas City Kings as the 29th pick in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft.

From then on, Johnson's career was marked by his tendency to pour in points in bunches, earning him the nickname “Fast Eddie.” In his first season with the Kings, Johnson averaged 12.1 points per game, and he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He went on to have successful stints playing for the Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, and the Houston Rockets. Overall, Johnson scored 19.0 points per game throughout his NBA career, with his shooting accuracy from distance a hallmark of his game. He is currently in 74th place on the NBA's all-time leading scorer list.
