Following his success in college football, McMillan was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 1986 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the most talented and hardworking players on the team. In his rookie season, he recorded six interceptions, tied for the most in the league. His exceptional skills on the field earned him a place in the Pro Bowl and the title of Defensive Rookie of the Year. In his five-year career with the Jets, McMillan continued to perform at a high level, ultimately becoming one of the most accomplished defensive players in the history of the franchise.

McMillan's time with the Jets came to an end in 1991, when he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. Though he only played for one season with the team, he continued to excel and was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Following his time with the Chiefs, McMillan retired from the NFL in 1992. Throughout his career, he recorded 22 interceptions, 4.5 sacks, and two touchdowns. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest defensive backs in the history of the New York Jets and is considered a key player in the team's success during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
