Frank Ryan

Frank Ryan, born on December 27, 1936, in Fort Worth, Texas, was an outstanding American football quarterback. He attended Rice University, where he managed to distinguish himself as an excellent student-athlete. Ryan was a three-year starter for the Owls, leading the team to their first bowl game in 1954. During his college career, he was a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection and an All-American. In recognition of his outstanding college career, Ryan was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. More about Frank Ryan

After college, Frank Ryan was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fifth round of the 1958 NFL Draft. However, he spent most of his career with the Cleveland Browns, where he became a star quarterback. Ryan led the Browns to three Eastern Conference championships in four seasons and took his team to the NFL Championship Game in 1964, winning the title over the Baltimore Colts. Ryan stayed with the Browns until 1969, when he was traded to the Washington Redskins for one season before retiring.

Frank Ryan's lasting legacy is his remarkable statistical achievement for the Cleveland Browns. He is the only quarterback in team history to pass for over 3,000 yards in four consecutive seasons. In 1963, he was named the NFL Player of the Year after passing for a league-leading 25 touchdowns and over 2,900 yards. Ryan was also known for his intelligence, holding a PhD in Mathematics from Rice University. After retiring from football, he had a successful business career, authoring several books on mathematics and finance. He died on March 11, 2021, at the age of 84, leaving a lasting impact on American football history.
