Fred Fuzzy Thurston Autographs
Fred "Fuzzy" Thurston was a professional American football player who played for the Green Bay Packers during the period when the team won five NFL titles and the first two Super Bowls. Born in Altoona, Wisconsin in 1933, Thurston started his football career by attending Valparaiso University. After a few meandering years in various small college and semi-pro teams, Thurston signed on with the Green Bay Packers in 1959. He quickly established himself as a vital part of the team's offensive line, known for his fierce competitiveness and willingness to play through injuries.
During his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, Thurston was part of the famous "Packer Sweep" offense that relied on strong blocking for running backs like Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung. Thurston played left guard for nine seasons with the team, and his athleticism and technical expertise made him a perfect fit for the Packers' well-coordinated, strategic offensive style. Throughout his career, Thurston was repeatedly praised for his toughness and leadership skills, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1961, 1962, and 1963.
After retiring from football in the late 1960s, Thurston worked as a broadcaster and coach, and became known for his engaging personality and charisma. He battled a variety of health issues in his later years, but remained an influential figure for the Green Bay Packers community until his death in 2014.
