Gene UpshawEugene Thurman Upshaw Jr. was an American football player and executive who played for the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 seasons. He was born on August 15, 1945, in Robstown, Texas, and after graduating from Texas A&M-Kingsville, he was drafted by the Raiders in 1967. Upshaw quickly became one of the best offensive guards in the game, earning seven Pro Bowl appearances and two First-Team All-Pro honors during his career.
Upshaw's remarkable football career was defined by his dominance on the field, his incredible durability, and his leadership qualities. He played in 217 consecutive games, a record that stood for many years. In addition to being a great player, he was also the president of the NFL Players Association from 1983 until his death in 2008. He also served on the board of directors for the Ronald McDonald House Charities and was involved in numerous philanthropic efforts throughout his life. Upshaw passed away on August 20, 2008, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He left a lasting impact on the game of football and on the lives of those he touched both on and off the field.
