Geno Atkins is an American football defensive tackle who has made a name for himself in the National Football League (NFL). Born on March 28, 1988, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Atkins grew up in a family of footballers. His father, Gene Atkins, played as a safety in the NFL, and his brother, Josh Atkins, played as a linebacker in college football. Geno attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he played as a defensive end, and was rated a four-star prospect by ESPN.com.
Atkins received a scholarship to play college football at the University of Georgia, where he played as a defensive tackle. During his time at Georgia, Atkins was a first-team All-SEC selection, and he finished his college career with 115 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft, and he immediately made an impact in his rookie season. In his first year in the NFL, Atkins recorded 3.0 sacks, one fumble recovery, and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.
Atkins has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. He has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times and has been named an All-Pro four times. In 2012, Atkins was the runner-up for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, and he finished his career in Cincinnati as the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks by a defensive tackle. Atkins was released by the Bengals in 2021 and signed with the Denver Broncos. With his impressive career achievements, Geno Atkins is undoubtedly one of the most dominant defensive players of his generation.
