George Halas, also known as "Papa Bear," is a legendary figure in American Football. Born on February 2, 1895, in Chicago, Illinois, Halas was a football player, coach, and owner who played a pivotal role in the development of the sport in America. Halas was a star athlete at the University of Illinois and played in the NFL for ten years during the 1920s. He scored the first touchdown in NFL history in 1920 as a member of the Decatur Staleys, later renamed the Chicago Bears, and went on to become one of the most successful and influential coaches in the league. After his playing career ended in 1930, Halas became the head coach and owner of the Bears. He led the team to six NFL championships and made a significant impact on the league's growth and success during his tenure.
