George Koonce Autographs
George Koonce was born on April 23, 1969, in Florence, South Carolina. He attended the University of East Carolina, where he played football for four years as a linebacker. He accumulated 467 career tackles, which remains a record for the university to this day. In 1992, Koonce was selected in the ninth round of the NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. He was an important part of the Packers' defense for eight seasons, playing in 118 games and recording 746 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and two interceptions. Koonce was an excellent tackler and was known for his hard hits and his ability to quickly diagnose plays.
Koonce was a key member of the Packers' Super Bowl-winning team in 1997. His performance in the playoffs that year was particularly impressive, as he recorded 24 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack. Koonce played his final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 2001 before retiring from the NFL. He then pursued a career in education and administration, earning a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Marquette University. Koonce went on to work as an administrator at numerous universities, including Marquette and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Off the field, Koonce has been active in various charitable causes, particularly in the area of education. He started the George Koonce Jr. Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to students who have overcome significant challenges in their lives to pursue higher education. Koonce has also been involved in advocating for better support for retired NFL players, particularly in the areas of mental health and financial stability. In 2012, he published a book titled Is There Life After Football? Surviving the NFL, which chronicles the challenges faced by retired NFL players and offers advice on how they can transition to post-football careers.
